Los Cucos: Mexican food and Margaritas
There’s no shortage of Mexican food in Houston, from mom and pop taquerias, to regional cuisines delivered in upscale surroundings. Los Cucos Mexican Café is somewhere in the middle, a homegrown eatery where food is consistently good, and served up in a predictable, comfortable atmosphere.
The vibe is part Spanish hacienda and part sports bar: World Cup soccer, golf and a Mexican soap opera played on big-screen televisions on our last visit. (Don’t doubt that the last example isn’t its own brand of sports).
Diners are welcomed with a large basket of chips accompanied by a mellow and creamy guacamole dip, as well as a salsa that is a bit darker and duskier than most. A huge menu offers everything from shrimp fajitas to soups and salads, and of course standards like enchiladas, tacos and other cheese-laden favorites, ranging in price from $7.99 to $13.99. A plate of chicken spinach quesadillas came with a mound of avocado, extra cheese and a sour cream sauce. Any vegetarians in your group will have limited offerings, as most everything, the server informed us, is cooked with lard.
On the other hand, there are some healthy options such as grilled fish and veggies. And whole-wheat tortillas are also available.
But let’s face it; most of us don’t go to a Mexican restaurant to stay on our diets. And that’s a good thing at Los Cucos, because they are known for a strong offering of specialty desserts – flan, tres leches cake, sopapillas and more offer a delicious end to your meal.
Los Cucos has more than one dozen locations in Texas – most of them in Houston, where the restaurant got its start.
